Red hot rides.

True to name, this event was a scorcher. Like, literally. I think the mercury cracked 30ºC but it felt way hotter on the roof. Did I mention we were on the roof? This edition of Hot Import Nights (HIN) was held at Castle Hill Towers—the rooftop carpark.

It was melting, traffic was hectic, and we got a little lost on the way there (why are all shopping centre carparks built like there’s a Minotaur inside them?), but the vibes upon entry were totally worth it. It was hot-rod galore, with multiple DJ stages, and delicious food trucks dotting the periphery.

I’m not a rev-head but seeing all the beautiful machines presented so lovingly in arrays of candy pink, oil-slick black, iridescent violet—I kinda get it now.

I love to rock a wedding, but I was so psyched for this change of pace—shout out to @djxcentrik of @theqpoint for the honour and for use of their decks.

It was so much fun to prep for this event. I stayed up late the night before making sure the track list was on-theme but not too on-the-nose. I was really happy with how the flow turned out: phonk-flavoured, lots of Baile Funk flips, and heavy on rap samples.

Of course, in the heat and excitement, I forgot to plug in my set recorder, so you’ll just have to make do with my best recollection of the day. My favourites are below.

Playback.

I’m a big, big Doechii fan (she’s everything!). This crazy Doechii feature had literally just dropped so I knew I had to open with it:

I’d also been itching to play this sick flip from @madbadting and @refilledmusic:

With Kendrick dominating so hard over past year, I also had to spin this fire remix of TV Off from @d_jam1l 🇵🇸 🇸🇩

As a massive Dave Nunes fan, it was also the perfect occasion to play one of my favourites from his Diaspora series, ADHD Rhythm

Special appearances.

Friend of the blog, the always-working @helenngoc was also present at HIN. Fresh off a return flight from the Philippines, Helen was especially enlisted to ensure the vibes remained pristine.

I’d be remiss to neglect to mention that @djnamsyd also played a solid set (special thank you to Nam for getting us there and back, troubleshooting hardware issues, and for being so handsome, etc).

Nam played a bunch of classics—some Cole, some RHCP, some Tevin Campbell. it was a great time.

I had such a blast at HIN, can’t wait to see what they come up with for the next edition.
